Jeanne & Steve
Married September 29, 2007
Durango , Colorado
The best thing about our Day was celebrating our union with our friends and family in the place we love the most, Colorado. It was incredible that so many people made the journey to Durango to celebrate with us. Almost all of our guests made our wedding into an entire vacation. They did all the Durango highlights, like riding the train, hiking, and visiting Mesa Verde National Park. We were fortunate to include a brunch and BBQ at our family’s home, which allowed us to spend additional, relaxed time with our guests.
The Details
How long to plan the wedding: Eight months.
Number of Guests: 90
Number from out-of-town: 90
Ceremony Site: St Columba Catholic Church
Reception Site: Sow’s Ear at the Silverpick Lodge
The Planning
My parents live in Missouri, but have a vacation home in Durango, so my mom and sister were able to help with much of the planning for me. They attended the Durango Wedding Expo and I used the Southwest Colorado Wedding Guide to help with finding vendors from afar. Two months before the wedding, we decided that we needed a behind the scenes, day-of coordinator, so we hired Mandy Miller of Celebrations Events Productions.
The Theme/Décor
We chose to have a fall mountain theme with a chocolate brown and green moss color scheme. It was simple and natural yet wonderfully elegant.
The Flowers
The bridesmaid bouquets contained green hydrangeas and the bride’s bouquet included white hydrangeas mixed with hypernicum berries. Our reception centerpieces incorporated twigs, hanging tea lights covered in moss, and scattered Kermit button mums. The entire centerpiece sat on a wood charger made by my dad and me!
The Food
Our food was absolutely wonderful! The Sow’s Ear did a fabulous job. We had a variety of appetizers before dinner during a cocktail party, and for dinner we served a choice of Beef filets or almond encrusted Mahi-Mahi.
The Favors
As our way of giving back to the earth, we gave our guests Colorado blue spruce tree seedlings in clay pots wrapped in burlap.
Special Touches
Since our beloved pets could not travel with us we had a special prayer during our ceremony for them.
We met in Colorado, so we tried to incorporate elements into our wedding that reminded us of Colorado. For example, we used rocks collected at our family home in Durango as part of our table decor.
The wood chargers used in our centerpieces came from tree trunks on our family ranch in Missouri.
What would you do Different
Nothing! Honestly, our wedding was perfect.
Our Advice
Wedding planning should be fun! Enjoy every minute of the planning for this special moment.
Let your wedding be a reflection of whom you are as a couple, not what society says a wedding should reflect.
Enjoy each other as well as all of the friends and family that have come to show their love and support. Include extra events so it is possible to spend as much time as you can with your friends and family.
Honeymoon Locale: Kauai, Hawaii.
